Washington Steelhead Spey Fishing Guide

About Stargazer Fly Co

Swing Only Spey Fishing

My experience is here for you...

Hello, my name is Lucas Choate and like most of you steelhead anglers out there I have developed an addiction that I have transformed into my purpose in life. My steelhead spey fishing experience ranges from Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Wisconsin, and Michigan. This has given me a very well rounded approach for targeting steelhead on the swing. My drive to learn and grow as a steelhead angler/guide never quits.

I am always pushing myself to gain more knowledge and try new things to give my clients the best opportunity at getting a steelhead on the swing. Not only is my goal going into every guide day to get my client on a fish but I want to teach them as much as I can so they can go out and swing steelhead on there own. If you are looking to add your name to the list of anglers who have successfully landed a steelhead in quite arguably the hardest fly fishing there is in the world you have come to the right place!

I really love to fly fish. But Spey casting sounded really complicated and I was intimidated by the idea of learning a whole new way to fish. Yesterday my husband and I spent the day with Lucas and... I loved every minute of it. Lucas is in his element as a guide and instructor. I’m sure I wasn’t the quickest learner but Lucas’ patience was amazing. I can’t tell you the number of times he had to repeat the same things to me during the day but never once did I sense him getting frustrated. He has a calm demeanor, he’s encouraging and he knows his stuff! As a bonus, he’s really quick to grab an arm when you’re about to get soaked (he saved me twice)! Ladies, I’ve fished with a few guides and Lucas is top notch. Gentlemen, if you want to get your wives or significant others into steelheading, don’t try to teach them on your own, call the expert. I can’t recommend Lucas highly enough!read more

A day on the river with Lucas is like having the X factor in your favor. On my own, I tend to question my every move...especially on a new piece of water. Lucas knows the right fly, the right leader... length, the right target depth for the clarity and the flow. All that makes for a FUN day of fishing, with a really FUN guide. Highly recommend Lucas!read more

Had a chance to swing flies on the Cowlitz on back to back days in April with Lucas. Conditions were Northwest "balmy". 10-15 kt winds and rain blowing sideways non-stop both days. That didn't deter... us though and Lucas was a superb guide throughout. I've been with many fly fishing guides in the past from WA to MT to Cabo and have yet to meet one who works as hard as him. Very knowledgeable as well - your understanding of holding water, flies, swing patterns and casting skills will all increase 10x after a day on the water with him. Lucas is now our go-to guide for peninsula steelhead from now more

Despite low and clear water and poor fisherman, Lucas was still able to put us on some steelhead. He was very knowledgeable about the river and knew exactly where the fish were holding. He made our... time in Washington very enjoyable. Thanks Lucas!read more

My buddy and I had an excellent time on the Nooch with Lucas. Fish were scarce but the company made up for it.

My steelhead season begins in October and ends at the end of April. The whole month of October is spent on the Cowlitz river targeting the very aggressive summer steelhead that can be found in this system from May to October. This time of the year provides the opportunity to get a fish on a dry line skating flies or doing a wet fly swing. These summer fish absolutely CRUSH your fly and can be very exhilarating.

With November being a slow kind of period things pick back up starting at the beginning of December on the Humptulips river. The whole month of December gives an angler the chance at hatchery steelhead on the “Hump”. Once we Have gotten into January I tend to migrate to the Wynoochee river primarily fishing it in January and February. During March I will be bouncing between the Humptulips and the Wynoochee river as this provides the best chance for a big winter native steelhead. If you are into switch rod fishing the Skookumchuck river is a great place to swing in February and March. The whole month of April I will be fishing on the Cowlitz river as this is when their winter steelhead run is at its peak.
